Stena Bulk deploys disaster recovery software
Shipping company looks to Reading-based Neverfail to make sure its email and database servers stay online.
Stena Bulk has implemented a disaster recovery product from Reading-based disaster recovery software company Neverfail Group.
The Gothenburg-based shipping company needed to ensure that data held on its Exchange and SQL servers could remain online should disaster strike. Stena Bulk re-examined its disaster recovery strategy as its Houston offices lie near the Gulf Coast where hurricanes Rita and Katrina struck with deadly effect two years ago. While its Houston facilities remained unaffected by the hurricanes it concluded that its global shipping operations would be adversely affected if inclement weather or planned maintenance were to cause a period of application downtime.
The company decided to strengthen its tape backup and off-site storage solution with Neverfail for Microsoft Exchange to protect and maintain email communications and Neverfail for Microsoft SQL Server to protect the company's ship management system.
"We rely heavily on the continuous exchange of data and email for all our negotiations, deliveries and payments - downtime is simply not an option for us," said Pr Persson, IT manager of Stena Rederi.
Persson said that the products have "already provided a return on our investment by helping us keep our business up and running through any situation."
The company has used the product to keep operations going during a two-day system maintenance and power shut-down operation in the company's Houston office. It transferred its servers over to its Gothenburg offices in order to keep systems running until power was restored.
