Government mobile deal to save £170 million

The public sector could save as much as 170 million under new framework agreements from OGCbuying.solutions.

The procurement agency signed a set of deals surrounding mobile voice and data with firms including BT, O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone, which will let public bodies order their services from a standardised catalogue at lower rates.

The deal, dubbed Mobile Solutions (II), starts in January and lets the government essentially buy in bulk.

Nigel George, mobile project manager for OGCbuying.solutions, said in a statement that the new framework will offer many benefits to the public sector. "Mobile Solutions (II) secures existing benefits enjoyed by customers, provides new savings opportunities and satisfies the growing demand for more flexible mobile voice and data services designed to meet the demands of the transformational government agenda."

Earlier this year, the head of the Office of Government Commerce claimed online buying could save the public sector 40 per cent in costs annually.
