iPhone gets HP printing app

HP says its iPrint application is the first printing application for the iPhone, but it only works with HP Wi-Fi printers.

HP has embraced the iPhone by releasing a free application that enables printing from the iPhone and iPod touch.

Using the application, users can connect to a Wi-Fi-enabled HP printer to print 6x4in photos directly from their device. The company says its application uses Apple's Bonjour technology - the service discovery protocol that enables devices to detect each other and connect without requiring user configuration.

When users launch the app it brings up the iPhone or iPod's Camera Roll, and selected pictures display a list of detected printers and a print button option at the bottom of the screen.

However, the app has several limitations. It only supports HP printers, and will not recognise other brands of Wi-Fi enabled printers. It can also only print JPEGs.

HP says it will be showcasing the new app at next month's Macworld Expo and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)in Las Vegas.

Apple has said that Steve Jobs will not be giving his traditional keynote at the upcoming Macworld Expo, with senior vice president Philip Schiller instead taking his place.
