First arrests for new police e-crime unit

The Police Central e-crime Unit raided addresses in London suspected to be part of an European cybercrime operation.

The newly-formed Police Central e-crime Unit (PCeU) has announced its first successful operation, which has resulted in nine arrests.

Over 50 officers from the PCeU, local boroughs and the Specialist Crime Directorate raided addresses in southeast London. They were targeting an organised European criminal network' which had been targeting the financial industry with a Trojan virus.

Two men from Uzbekistan, 23 and 25, were charged with conspiracy to defraud and money laundering, and remanded in custody. The others were bailed to return to police at a later date.

The PCeU was working as part of a new Virtual Task Force, which was said to comprise of key partners from across the financial services industry, sharing intelligence specifically connected to criminal activity.
