Facebook Lite looking to take on Twitter?
Facebook to unveil a new 'lite' version after buying FriendFeed and revamping its search.
Facebook is up to something, though at this point it's not entirely clear what exactly it's planning.
The social networking site has sent out invitations to some users for a new system called Facebook Lite - but the link isn't set to go live until later tonight.
The invite reads: "We are building a faster, simpler version of Facebook that we call Facebook Lite. It's not finished yet and we have plenty of kinks to work out, but we would love to get your feedback on what we have built so far."
Yesterday, Facebook picked up feed aggregator FriendFeed and announced real-time search.
The combination of the Lite launch with the FriendFeed acquisition and search changes have some suggesting Facebook is looking to take on rival Twitter in the real-time area - especially when it comes to search.
Since Twitter launched, its streamlined, real-time network has picked up much market momentum. That said, Twitter has 45 million users compared to Facebook's 250 million.
