IE slips as Chrome continues to gain market share
And today's launch of the IE browser ballot looks likely to continue the decline.
Internet Explorer has slipped again as Chrome is the only browser to post a gain in market share this month, according to Net Applications.
"The Google Chrome browser gained 0.4 per cent of global usage share in January. All other major browsers showed a month-to-month decline," the analytics firm noted.
Chrome now holds 5.61 per cent of the market share, and the third ranking after knocking Apple's Safari from that spot in December. Google has been advertising heavily to encourage users to try its browser.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer holds 61.58 per cent, down just slightly form 62.12 per cent in January, while Mozilla's Firefox slipped from 24.43 per cent to 24.23 per cent.
IE has been slipping all year, from a high of 68.32 per cent in June of last year.
That trend looks likely to continue as Microsoft today starts offering a "browser ballot" encouraging IE users to consider the other browsers on the market - a move to placate the European Union after the regulator decided Microsoft abused its dominant market position when it bundled IE with Windows.
