Shopping spree

Rumours abounded this week that Palm was up for sale, and set to be picked up by HTC, Lenovo or another tech firm. HTC has denied it's in the buying mood, and Palm itself has said it's happy to stay on its own, but that hasn't stopped the gossip from swirling.

Apple has also been the centre of acquisition stories, with chatter claiming the firm is looking at picking up AMD or ARM.

Results

A few big tech firms posted quarterly results this week. Google had good news, as did IBM, while AMD beat forecasts. Toshiba posted solid sales, while Sony Ericsson found its way back into the land of profit.

VMware posted growth off the back of virtualisation's continued success, while parent EMC also had a solid quarter.

Windows 7 sales helped boost Microsoft, the iPhone helped out Apple, and Amazon continued to post profit growth.

It wasn't such a great quarter Yahoo, which saw its revenue slip.

Best of the rest

Cisco says the ash from the volcano has lead businesses to try teleconferencing, while Apple asked a tech site to return a prototype iPhone that went missing.

And Facebook unveiled its new Open Graph, which should see the social networking site spread across more of the web.
