Symantec launches broad mobile strategy

Symantec

Symantec has unveiled a new mobile strategy one designed to provide for IT organisations, consumers and communication service providers.

The company claims it is the first vendor to offer mobile security and management solutions capable of scaling from one to millions of users to those three groups.

The Symantec business offerings are already available, with solutions including device management, encryption and VeriSign Identity Protection Access for Mobile.

Consumer mobile security products are already on the market as well, but the communication service provider services, designed to help secure networks and improve policy enforcement, are due to become available this winter.

"Symantec's mission is to secure people and information through identity, protection and context, and our broad approach to mobile security and management is a key extension of protection for all of our customers," said Francis deSouza, senior vice president, of Symantec's enterprise security group, Symantec.

"By providing mobile security and management for smart devices, we're making it easier for enterprises to allow their employees to use their device of choice without putting corporate data at risk."

Symantec has launched new mobile security features for Android and Apple iOS as well, including remote wipe and password policy enforcement.

Ubiquity

Symantec has also introduced a new security technology called Ubiquity, claiming it is the first technology to use the collective intelligence of more than 100 million computer systems.

Using information from its user base, as well as data from Symantec's Global Intelligence Network, Ubiquity can calculate "a highly accurate safety rating" for almost every software file passing through a network.

The service has already featured in Norton 2011 consumer security products and Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection, but now the firm is preparing to roll out the technology to more enterprise products.

"There is no other malware protection technology in the world that has the capability of Symantec's Ubiquity," said Stephen Trilling, senior vice president of security technology and response at Symantec.

To cap it all off, the company has launched a new logo (see above).
