Office 365 arrives on the iPhone
Microsoft's online business productivity product makes its iPhone debut in the US.
Microsoft has released an iOS app that will let Office 365 users view and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents using their iPhones.
Subscribers to Microsoft's cloud-based productivity suite can use the Office Mobile for iPhone app to access documents stored on their SkyDrive or SharePoint accounts while on the go.
The Office Mobile app is only available from the US iTunes store at the moment, and there is no word so far on when UK Apple users will be able to get their hands on it.
It is free to download, but iPhone owners will need to hold an Office 365 Home Premium or ProPlus subscription to use it, as well as an iPhone 4 or higher that runs at least iOS 6.1.
The software is compatible with the third generation of iPads upwards and the iPad mini, but the user experience has only been optimised for use with the iPhone.
In a blog post, the software giant assured users the layout and format of their documents will be unaffected by changes made using the iPhone app, and the viewing experience has been optimised for smaller screens.
"When you're on your phone, you'll easily find the content you viewed on your computer in the Recent Documents panel," Julia White, general manager of the Microsoft Office division explained.

Users also have the option to download documents, edit them offline, and then save them the next time they are connected to the internet.
"When reviewing Word documents on your phone, the Resume Reading feature takes to you the exact point in the document where you left off on your computer so you never miss a beat," White added.
Speculation about the release of native Office apps for iOS devices has been building for some time.
Earlier this year, a Morgan Stanley analyst claimed Microsoft could be making an additional $2.5 billion a year by releasing an Office app for the iPad.
