VMware has announced the launch of its new VMware Zero Carbon Committed cloud partner initiative, as the company looks to help drive customer decarbonisation.
The firm says the aim is to catalyse the transition to zero-carbon clouds, helping its customers reach their sustainability and decarbonisation targets by connecting them with cloud providers that have aligned goals.
VMware Cloud Verified providers that participate in the scheme must operate infrastructure, energy and carbon-efficient data centres based on VMware's software-defined data centre (SDDC) technologies. Partners must also be committed to powering those data centres with renewable energy sources.
European based partners Atea and OVHcloud have already committed to the initiative, joining Equinix, IBM, Microsoft and OVHcloud US.
“It’s crucial we make significant progress on climate action as soon as possible, so it’s encouraging to see more and more companies, including VMware customers and partners, as well as countries committing to reach net-zero carbon,” explained Joe Baguley, VP and CTO EMEA, VMware.
“This initiative builds on VMware’s history of helping customers reduce their environmental impact through the more efficient use of IT infrastructure and will make it easier for our customers and partners to accelerate their transition to a low-carbon economy.”
The company said it is now planning a phased approach over the next decade to achieve 100% renewable energy-powered and carbon-efficient VMware clouds.
Through the Zero Carbon Committed initiative, VMware says it envisions that by 2030, all of its public clouds will be powered with renewable energy and run infrastructure-, energy- and carbon-efficient operations.
Essentially, the scheme aims to connect customers who have sustainability and low-carbon goals with a VMware provider that is committed to achieving cero carbon clouds through renewable energy-powered operations and energy-efficient data centres, the firm said.

François Sterin, OCHcloud’s chief industry officer, also commented: “We have seen significant interest from all customers in maximising data center efficiency and are proud to serve as an inaugural member of VMware’s Zero Carbon Committed cloud partner initiative and share in the commitment to generating net carbon zero emissions by 2030.”
