Telefonica and VMware tie up on VDC IaaS

Telefonica and VMware have formed a strategic partnership that will see VMware providing the telecoms company with its VMware vSphere, VMware vCenter and VMware vCloud Director to strengthen its offering to companies in Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the US, Mexico and Peru.

The IaaS solution will be presented as Telefonica's Virtual Data Centre (VDC) product, with a number of upgrades in its third iteration.

New features include infrastructure auto-scaling, which enables companies to autonomously respond to peaks in demand, ensuring the system doesn’t decrease in particularly demanding or unexpected situations.

Telefonica explained its latest VDC version allows organisations to create a dedicated physical environment with the same features as a virtual data centre.

A marketplace is also available to allow businesses to buy add-ons including applications and middleware including databases, application servers or web servers.

VMware and Telefonica are also developing a centralised management model that will help the two companies' customers manage their local and global nodes from a single place, making it easier for businesses to manage their VDC.

One customer, Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, part of the publishing division of the Bertelsmann Group explained the solution has had a positive impact on its operation, specifically the disaster recovery solution is has implemented between Spain and Miami.

“The international capabilities also make it possible to implement business continuity solutions with the quality and stability required by large companies," the company said.

Telefonica has also launched an initiative to drive forward the digital transformation of companies using the cloud. Living Cloud seeks to help large enterprises move to the cloud, in order to introduce innovative working practices using cloud technologies.
