ActiveState Software today announced new cloud application management and monitoring features for Stackato – its infrastructure-agnostic, polyglot private platform-as-a-service (PaaS).
Built on VMware-based Cloud Foundry open source project, Stackato is designed to enable private PaaS for Python, Java, Ruby, PHP, Perl and Node.js-based applications.
Jeff Hobbs, director of engineering at ActiveState, told Cloud Pro that although Cloud Foundry is focused on VMware products, it was also a “do-it-yourself” open source project.
“Stackato takes that a couple steps further by offering a ready-to-use private PaaS system with enhancements at the core level and new features, readymade to work on multiple hypervisors,” he said.
While this release does not support OpenStack or kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) powered Open Virtualisation Alliance (OVA) clouds, Hobbs said the company was currently working to add them.
“This release extendsStackato to support auto-scaling in vSphere environments,” he added.
The release also features a new administrator dashboard to provide a view of the activities of developers deploying an application, the number of instances deployed, memory usage and the data services and languages used to help improve private cloud resource management.
Earlier this year, ActiveState announced its partnership with software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider New Relic to provide real-time application monitoring. Rival PaaS developer OpenLogic also followed suit recently with a similar tie up.
Now this new release includes the integration of New Relic Standard Edition for Java, PHP, Python and Ruby applications free of charge, for monitoring end-user experience and application performance and proactively diagnosing code-level performance bottlenecks.
It also includes improvements in Java deployment to Stackato from Spring Tool Suite (STS) and Eclipse to enable Java developers to use their existing desktop development environments for deploying directly to the cloud.
Having released an early implementation of Stackato earlier this year, ActiveState also said the PaaS was now out of private beta and open to any cloud IT administrators or developers who want to try or test a private PaaS.
