Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched two reporting services for its EC2 IaaS offering to help customers use their instances more efficiently.

The interactive tools, dubbed EC2 Instance Usage Report and EC2 Reserved Instance Utilization Report, are designed to make it easier for administrators to track their use of EC2 instances and reserved instances, AWS has said.

Both tools present data as a graph, rather than a raw data set, making it easier to see usage trends over time.

The introduction of the graphical reporting features comes less than a month after the organisation updated its Billing Console to include a more visually appealing dashboard.

According to Jeff Barr, AWS evangelist, the reporting tools have been introduced to make monitoring instances less time-consuming for administrators.

“These reports will give you insights into your instance usage and your usage patterns, and will provide you with information that you need to optimise your EC2 usage,” Barr said in a blog post announcing the arrival of the new reporting features.

EC2 Instance Usage Report shows historical usage and cost data and can be refined down to hourly, daily or monthly timeframes.

EC2 Reserved Instance Utilization Report displays hourly and total costs for Reserved Instances, including cost savings when compared to On-Demand instances. Average and maximum utilisation rates are also displayed.

Both EC2 Instance Usage Report and EC2 Reserved Instance Utilization Report are available immediately. However, they require Detailed Billing Reports With Resources and Tags to be enabled on users’ accounts.
