Cisco to acquire Springpath in $320 million deal

Cisco has announced the acquisition of hyperconvergence software developer Springpath for $320 million (248 million).

Springpath's distributed file system has been specifically designed for hyperconverged infrastructure, allowing businesses to take advantage of server-based storage systems.

"This acquisition is a meaningful addition to our data center portfolio and aligns with our overall transition to providing more software-centric solutions," said Rob Salvagno, Cisco vice president, Corporate Business Development.

"Springpath's file system technology was built specifically for hyperconvergence, which we believe will deliver sustainable differentiation in this fast-growing segment. I'm excited to be able to provide our customers and partners with the simplicity and agility they need in data center innovation."

Springpath and Cisco have a long history of working together to deliver hyperconverged infrastructure. The historic working partnership includes the introduction of HyperFlex, which has been enabling companies to use Cisco's unified computing systems (UCS) with the Cisco HyperFlex HX Data Platform to offer companies the ease of using a single platform for both datacentre infrastructure and software since 2016.

The two companies have also worked on shared go-to-market strategies for hyperconverged networking to gain more than 1,800 joint customers.

Springpath's team will join Cisco's Computing Systems Product Group led by Liz Centoni when the deal closes at the beginning of 2018.

"Our customers and partners in the datacentre space are frequently asking for solutions that can help them simplify management operations and power more applications," Salvagno added. "This acquisition is one more example of Cisco's shift towards providing more software-centric solutions."
