Toshiba reboots Android tablet range with Tegra 4 chipset

Toshiba hasn't given up on the tablet market in the UK, with the Japanese manufacturer unveiling high-end Android devices.

The Excite Pure and Write tablets run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and have virtually identical specifications. The 10.1in devices ship with a 2560 x 1600 resolution Gorilla Glass 2 display.

Toshiba has signed up to use Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor, which boasts support for Ultra HD (4K) technology. This chipset is backed up by 2GB of RAM and the firm offers a choice of 16/32GB internal storage.

Connectivity comes in the form of WLAN and Bluetooth 4. The 32GB models will also support 3G/LTE.

The Excite device supports micro USB, micro HDMI and micro SDXC cards. The tablets weigh 632g and will also have front (1.2-megapixel) and rear (8-megapixel) cameras.

Toshiba also plans to roll out support for Wi-Fi Miracast over-the-air in the fourth quarter of 2013. This will allows users to share content wirelessly from tablets directly to compatible devices such as TVs without the need for a Wi-Fi network.

The key difference between the Pure and Write tablets is the pen input. The Excite Write tablets will ship will a digitiser and Toshiba's own note-taking application TruNote.

Toshiba claims both devices will be able to last 10 hours on a single charge based on "average usage". The firm classifies this as 65 per cent web surfing (using 3G or WiFi), 10 per cent video playback and 25 per cent standby mode.

Pricing for the Excite Pro starts at 349. The Excite Write, which includes the stylus will retail from 499.

Toshiba also offers an entry-level Pure model. This ships with Nvidia's previous generation Tegra 3 processor, a 1280 x 800 display and 16GB of internal storage. Prices for this tablet start at 249.
