Samsung breaks 5G data transmission speed record

Samsung has trialled a 7.5Gbps 5G network, achieving the fastest-ever 5G data transmission rate and a stable connection at 1.2Gbps in a travelling vehicle.

The test was the first to take place in an outside environment rather than a lab, while the moving test took place on a 4.35km professional outdoor race track, travelling at a speed of 100km/h.

Samsung conducted its speed trials over a 28GHz 5G network, which was previously unheard of because higher frequency networks tend to limit speed and have shorter ranges.

Chang Yeong Kim, head of the DMC R&D Centre at Samsung, said: "In addition to leveraging our own global R&D capabilities, we will also continue to cooperate with other industry leaders and research centres across the world.

"Whether you are talking about mobile devices, the cloud, or the Internet of Things, the demand for 5G telecommunications standard and its supporting technologies will continue to grow."

Yeong Kim said the company will continue to build upon the milestones made today and develop advanced technologies that contribute to the 5G standard that isn't expected to become mainstream for another five years, at least with many predicting it won't be released until 2022.

Samsung has been storming along the innovation trail this week, announcing on Monday it had developed Wi-Fi technology that boasted speeds up to five-times the current maximum via a 60GHz Wi-Fi network.
