Chinese phone maker OnePlus has displayed its first 5G prototype smartphone powered at MWC 2019 on Monday.
The device was on display at the Qualcomm stand, sealed within a protective case for confidentiality since the phone is inthe prototype stage and OnePlus has yet to officially reveal a market0ready 5G phone. But this was a sneak peek for visitors at MWC19 who were treated to a taste of 5G cloud gaming on the device as a way to showcase the potential of 5G and how its significant bandwidth can be exploited.
A second device was used as a live feed to display messages left by OnePlus community members on the OnePlus "Say Hello to 5G" community page which went live on February 22.
At the Qualcomm Technologies booth, OnePlus simulated a futuristic setting of 5G cloud gaming where players would only need a smartphone and a gamepad. Through the powerful capabilities of cloud processing as well as the throughput and responsiveness of 5G, players can control large high-fidelity online that are generally only playable after downloading onto a powerful PC first.
OnePlus is pushing forward with its 5G endeavours by partnering up with EE, which will make it one of the first companies to release a 5G commercial smartphone in the UK.
OnePlus has benefitted from a close relationship with Qualcomm, whose chips it has used since the OnePlus One. This latest mystery 5G device is said to be coming out with the Snapdragon 855 chipset and the Snapdragon X50 5G modem.
"5G is a game changer," said OnePlus founder and chief, Pete Lau. "It can change everything from gaming to communication, to health and beyond. More than that, it can perform several, or all, of these at the same time."
