Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72 bring flagship features to the mid-range
The Galaxy A52 5G is half the price of Apple's 5G-enabled iPhone 12
Samsung has unveiled three new smartphones that aim to rival the iPhone 12 by bringing flagship features to the mid-range market.
The Samsung Galaxy A52, A52 5G, and A72 aim to “democratise” the Galaxy range by providing quality features - including a 64MP high-res camera lens and Super AMOLED displays - at an affordable price.
The Galaxy A52 5G and A72 will fetch £399 and £419, respectively, while the standard A52 costs $415 (around £299). However, Samsung spokesperson has confirmed to IT Pro that standard A52 won't be available in the UK.
Both the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and A72 feature octa-core processors teamed with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The former packs a 6.5in Full HD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the latter features a larger 6.7in FHD screen with a lesser 90Hz refresh rate.
The Android 11 handsets also feature support for 25W Super Fast charging, and both feature quad-camera setups comprising 64MP main, 12MP ultra-wide and 5MP macro and depth sensors. Both the Galaxy A52 5G and A72 also come equipped with a 32MP front-facing camera.
The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is the only model that supports 5G connectivity, making it a more affordable alternative to more expensive Samsung offerings, such as the Galaxy Note 20 5G. Moreover, it’s half the price of Apple’s iPhone 12, which could be seen as an attempt by Samsung to reclaim the title of the world’s top smartphone vendor.
The announcement of the Galaxy A52 and A72 handset comes after Samsung admitted it would be forced to delay the release of the new Galaxy Note due to global semiconductor shortages. The range could even be shelved indefinitely as demand for Samsung premium smartphones weakened over 2020, which is why the company might be focusing on bringing out new offerings to its mid-range lineup.

Commenting on the announcement, Samsung’s president and head of Mobile Communications Business, Dr. TM Roh, said that the company “strives to give consumers what they want and need most”.
“That’s why we set out with a vision for the Galaxy A series to democratise Galaxy innovations for everyone. The Galaxy A52, A52 5G and A72 encapsulate the Galaxy brand philosophy with cutting-edge innovations, services and features at an accessible price,” he added.
