Ofcom chief wants switching between broadband providers made easier

Broadband providers need to make it easier for customers to switch suppliers, Ofcom chief Ed Richards has declared.

Richard said, despite the UK having one of the most competitive telecoms markets in the world, the difficulties associated with moving between broadband providers means consumers are failing to take full advantage of this.

In a speech at an event hosted by the regulator, Richards called on the industry to "transform switching; to remove the inconvenience, delays and uncertainty that currently can bedevil consumers when trying to change their provider".

"A system that enables consumers to take advantage of the increasing competition and innovation available [is a must]," he added.

His comments come hot on the heels of an Ofcom announcment in August proposing new measures to increase confidence and convenience in the process of moving providers.

Under the new system, the provider gaining the user's custom will lead the process of transition, in the hope that many of the complexities associated with the process will be removed.

Richards said improvements to the switching of voice and broadband services on one network is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done.

"Consumers who buy three communications services from a single provider need to be able to switch their bundle easily, not just the broadband and voice parts," he said.

"And what about switching between different network infrastructure - to and from cable for example?"

Removing the remaining barriers to switching is essential in ensuring that the communications sector continues to deliver value for money, Richards added, especially at a time when the cost of living is increasing for so many people across the UK and Europe.
