Mobileye and Ordnance Survey unite to improve autonomous car services
The initiative will boost smart city projects with higher accuracy mapping
Mobileye and Ordnance Survey have jointly developed a network location project to help improve the accuracy of autonomous car and intelligent mobility services.
Ordnance Survey's datasets including its OS MasterMap will be combined with Mobileye's car-mounted camera-based mapping, identifying where key road components are located, including lamp posts, manhole covers and road markings.
This offers a much more detailed overview of what automated cars can expect to experience as they travel around the roads.
It will also allow infrastructure-based services around smart cities to be improved, with higher levels of visibility for service providers. For example, planners will be able to see where road features are placed to improve how people travel around areas.

"One key, and common, learning is that detailed and accurate geospatial data is a must for the success of these projects. We envisage this new rich data to be key to how vehicles, infrastructure, people and more will communicate in the digital age."
The combined data will be shared with a variety of market segments including the energy and infrastructure sector to help them keep tabs on their assets and plan for new road infrastructure. It will also be used to help the rollout of 5G networking, intelligent mobility and connected cars.
